Matt Corrall

Design Manager, PlayStation

Matt Corrall started out 25 years ago designing Lego sets in Denmark, then spent years as an industrial designer before moving into software and service design as UX became a recognised term. He specialises in complex interfaces and emerging forms of interaction, from windfarm software and stock-trading workstations to VR, AR and gesture-controlled car interfaces. Today he leads a team of designers at PlayStation in London, building the software tools game developers use to ship on PS5.

Matt Corrall

Who is Matt Corrall?

I started out 25 years ago as a toy designer for Lego in Denmark, designing Lego sets like pirates, dinosaurs, and knights and dragons! I then worked as an industrial designer for many years on physical products ranging from medical gadgets and smart energy meters, to packaging for chocolate and olive oil.

I sidestepped into software and service design around the time UX became a recognised term, and it was a fairly smooth transition from industrial design. I’ve since come to specialise in complex interfaces and new, emerging forms of interaction design. Examples would be: software for designing windfarms, workstations for stock traders, immersive VR and AR, and gesture-controlled interfaces for cars.

I’ve worked in agencies, big companies and small starts-ups, and in all those different places I’ve established, hired and run design teams, established ways of working and taught tech companies to embrace the enormous value designers bring.

I’m a lifelong advocate for the power of drawing, imagination and close-knit collaboration. Over the years I’ve helped a lot of people to feel more confident in their creativity, to cut through the noise and to make big creative breakthroughs — sometimes armed with just paper, pens and the right people in the room.

Today I’m based in PlayStation’s London office, where my team of designers and I work on software tools for game developers — tools for example that help them port their games to PS5 and publish to the PlayStation digital store. Now I get to help people make the games I love, whilst solving complex design problems and helping designers grow in their careers. For most of my own career, it’s been hard to top my time at Legoland in Denmark, but with PlayStation I’ve finally pulled it off!

What is your vision on our creative industry?

For me, the big innovation right now is a renewed focus on lo-fi and ‘oh-so-human’ ways of working. I think the creative industry is discovering a renewed confidence in itself as we find AI’s limits, and realise just how much we’re needed after all for the messy and often unpredictable way people work and software gets made.

I believe designers truly shine when immersed in big, ambiguous, uncertain problems. We have powerful skills in making sense from chaos, shepherding the emotional and subjective, dreaming bigger and better than anyone expects, and bringing ideas to life like magic.

In my vision, designers are better understood as both strategic leaders and skilled craftspeople — simultaneously working at the broad level of business and user goals, and the focused, detail level of UI and interactions. In my experience, our ability to connect the macro and micro — and guide others through a solid creative process — mean we’re key to ensuring the right thing ships and, when it does, it’s a dream to use. My hope is that our mastery of the subjective, creative and human becomes a core part of how every tech business operates.

What are you bringing to UX Rotterdam?

Staying indispensable as a designer

I'm going to talk about staying indispensable and always-employable as a designer as our industry matures and as the expectations of our clients and employers change. I'll explore our intrinsic strengths as designers and as human beings in light of both AI adoption and the maturing of our own industry, and discuss how the right storytelling for the right audience can ensure everyone is excited to work with you.
