Who is Sander Viegers?
Head of Design at Rabobank, where I lead a multidisciplinary organization of 100+ designers and researchers shaping end-to-end experiences for millions of customers and employees. Together, we build products, services, and journeys across consumer banking, business banking, and internal platforms.
My focus is on scaling design as a strategic capability by building strong teams, fostering a customer-centric culture, and creating the governance, operations, and practices that enable over 200 agile product teams to deliver measurable business and customer impact.
Previously, I held design and product leadership roles at Microsoft, Amazon, and Catawiki. I hold a Master's degree in Industrial Design Engineering from Delft University of Technology and am named inventor on multiple design patents.
What is your vision on our creative industry?
The creative industry's power is leading into the unknown. Design, rooted in customer insight and business reality, bridges uncertainty by building trust—not through new tools, but through the relationships we build. At Rabobank, we don't just deliver concepts—we deliver the evidence and relationships that make people willing to invest in the designed change.
What are you bringing to UX Rotterdam?
Lately, I've become fascinated by the relationship between design and trust. Designers are trained to imagine what does not yet exist and make it tangible. But here's what I've learned: helping people believe in and invest in that future is often harder than creating the idea itself. Design is fundamentally about change. It introduces uncertainty. And uncertainty makes people hesitant—even when the vision is sound. At Rabobak, we've discovered that turning ideas into impact requires more than expertise or a clever concept. It requires trusted relationships. Real partnerships where we combine customer insight, business understanding, and imagination to help organizations navigate the unknown together. In this talk I want to walk you through examples where this worked—and what we learned when it almost didn't. Because the difference between a design that stalls and a design that scales often comes down to one thing: did we earn trust before we asked for belief?
