Who is Jeroen van Heteren?
Jeroen van Heteren is Head of UX Pensions at IG&H. He has worked in UX and digital design for many years, across industries ranging from tech and retail to government and financial services.
Today, his main focus is financial services and pensions. He leads the UX discipline within the pensions domain at IG&H and works on participant portals, pension planning tools, self-service journeys and scalable design systems.
What connects these different projects is his interest in making complex things simple. He likes to understand why something works the way it does, challenge it where needed, and turn complex processes, technology and regulations into experiences people can actually understand and use.
What is your vision on our creative industry?
I think our creative industry is moving towards a way of working where ideas can be explored, tested and brought to life much more quickly. AI is one of the biggest drivers of that change. What excites me most about AI is not necessarily that it makes us faster. It is that it makes it much easier to try things.
Traditionally, bringing an idea to life quickly becomes a discussion about priorities, budgets, development capacity and planning. That naturally means that a lot of ideas never get beyond a conversation or a Figma screen. With AI agents and bots, that is starting to change. We can take an idea, turn it into something tangible, test it, change it and try again with much less effort. A rough thought or even a voice note can become a working prototype surprisingly quickly.
For me, that brings some of the fun and creativity back into design. You don't have to be completely sure that an idea is worth pursuing before you start exploring it. You can simply make it, see what happens and learn from it.
I think this will also change the role of designers. Creating the actual output becomes less of the constraint. The more important skills become knowing what is worth exploring, asking the right questions, recognising what is good and understanding what people actually need.
So while AI will certainly make our industry more efficient, I think the more interesting change is that it can give us more freedom to experiment and be creative again.
What are you bringing to UX Rotterdam?
I want to bring a perspective from an industry that isn't always associated with exciting UX: pensions and financial services.
It is a world full of regulation, legacy technology, complex organisations and products that are difficult to understand. And that is exactly what makes it interesting from a UX perspective.
I want to share some of the things we are learning about making that complexity more manageable, how the role of UX can grow beyond individual screens and journeys, and how designers can have more influence on the products and services they work on.
We are also starting to explore what these journeys could look like in a future where people have their own AI agents or bots that can manage parts of their financial lives for them. What happens when the user is no longer the only one interacting with your service, but their agent is as well? And what does that mean for the journeys, interfaces and services we design today?
The exact storyline is still taking shape, but it will be practical, based on real projects and challenges, while also looking ahead at how AI could fundamentally change the way people interact with complex services.
