Danny Meijer

Experience & Product Design Lead, iO Digital

I'm Experience & Product Design Lead at iO, where I lead the UX craft behind digital product design across pitches and client work. I've been designing digital experiences for seventeen years, and leading the designers who make them for a good part of that.

Danny Meijer

Who is Danny Meijer?

A large part of my work is winning and shaping the work itself: pitching to boards and marketing directors, building the story that makes a design direction land, training designers and companies on quality design and advocating for design where the decisions actually get made. I've done that with clients like Ahold Delhaize, ASML, Achmea and Wageningen University & Research. Recent work includes UX strategy & design for Thuisarts.nl, the largest medical information platform in the Netherlands, the Zelfzorgwijzer care assistant app for Zilveren Kruis, and earlier the corporate website for Ahold Delhaize and Knab app. Before iO I was Head of UX & Visual Design at Avanade Netherlands and part of the European UX leadership team, and worked as a UX-specialist on wetten.nl and overheid.nl for the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations.

My focus right now is deliberately narrow: the craft itself. I work across teams on the quality of UX practice, and spend most of my time on how designers work with AI in a way that strengthens their judgment rather than just accelerating their output. I write about design craft, authenticity and AI on Medium, and speak regularly at industry and client events.

What is your vision on our creative industry?

Our industry is in the middle of the biggest shift I've seen in seventeen years. I don't think we've grasped how deep it goes.

Almost every agency I know, mine included, is busy adopting AI tooling. Faster research, generated wireframes and UI, automated QA & WCAG checks. It's real and it works. But adopting tools is not the same as changing how you work.

Our whole way of working was designed before any of this existed. Linear, phased, and held together by artefacts we produce mainly so that disciplines can understand each other: reports, personas, journey maps, specs. That shape was never ideal. It's just the shape all that translating forced on us.

What excites me is that we now have the best opportunity ever to increase the quality of design work and focus the craft. Because what happens when the translating stops being necessary. When designers, developers, strategists and content people all draw from the same living understanding of the people they serve, nobody has to hand work down a line. Everyone works in parallel around a centre that keeps getting smarter, instead of a document that dies after go-live. That isn't a productivity gain. It's a shift that puts AI in a correct place and the designers back in the drivers seat

There's a catch, and I'd be dishonest to skip it. Production got faster, so expectations moved. Clients assume everything happens twice as fast now, which means the time we saved went into the schedule instead of into thinking.

And there's a question I hear nobody ask: what if AI becomes expensive? Today's prices aren't a market price, they're investors buying adoption. So if your whole practice rests on a subscription, what's left of it when the subscription gets real? I think that's a useful test rather than a doom scenario. Whatever survives it is your actual skill.

Which is why I'm optimistic. We have a chance to build ways of working that put the craft at the centre instead of the paperwork around it. It takes the courage to redraw the process rather than decorate it. The studios that do will make the best work of their lives.

What are you bringing to UX Rotterdam?

Your New Sidekick, Not Your New Stakeholder

I think this is the best moment to be a designer in years. And I also think we're so busy being impressed by our tooling that we're missing what's happening on the other side of it.

Because something strange is going on. Designers have never had more powerful tools, and they've never been less sure what makes them a designer. Myself included, some days. Will we be replaced? Will the role shift into something else? What am I actually for?

So I'll share what that looks like, what I'm learning as I put it in front of clients and colleagues, and maybe touch upon one question I hear almost nobody talk about: what happens when AI suddenly gets to expensive?

Expect critical thinking, genuine excitement, and a sneak peek of a new framework.

You'll leave knowing exactly what your job is. And a lot more excited that it's yours.
