Job Harmsen is co-founder and Head of Design & Brand at Polarsteps, the travel app used by over 23 million people to plan, track and relive their adventures.
Who is Job Harmsen?
Job started designing at a very young age and later studied Art & Technology, where his graduation project became the very first Polarsteps interface. Together with three co-founders, he built Polarsteps in evenings and weekends until it could become a full-time company. After the app launched in 2015, Job spent the first five years doing all the design himself. Today he leads a team of around 10 designers and researchers across product, brand and research.
What is your vision on our creative industry?
Polarsteps has since been highlighted by Apple as one of the most loved travel apps. Job recently spoke at Apple's Amsterdam event about how the team implemented Liquid Glass. He is currently working on the next chapter of Polarsteps. The goal is to connect inspiration, planning, tracking and reliving into one loop, built on real trips from real travellers, guided by a strong design direction.
What are you bringing to UX Rotterdam?
The story is still taking shape (which feels fitting for a talk about designing in a time where nothing stands still). I'll talk about how we keep a design team of very different people moving in the same direction, and why in a world full of AI we're betting on the opposite: real people, real trips and a community of millions of travellers. No big predictions, hopefully inspiring, and definitely human.
